School
School in ancient Greece was different in different parts of Greece, the reason being that they did have a unified country but rather many city states, each city state had it’s own vision on what the ideal life should be like , therefore leading to a different education system for each state. For our example education systems, we’ll be going over the education system of Athens, and the education system of Sparta, seeing how they were similar, how they were different what purpose they served in their societies. Athens education system was quite similar to our education, with one big difference, girls were not allowed in school. Boys were taught by their mother, or a male slave until the reached the age of 6, when they reached 6 years of age they were taken to primary school, the whole school consisted only of male students and teachers. At the schools the boys had 3 categories of subjects, Music, which was singing songs, playing the flute, and lyre, and reciting poems, Grámmata (which translates into letters) was learning letters, grammar, and understanding the words of famous poets, and last, but not least they had Physical Education, which consisted of wrestling, discus, javelin, running, jumping and ancient forms of street hockey, and soccer, they did this to look attractive, and make it a habit for a healthy life. Girls received education from their mother or a slave, but it was usually just about learn how to be a proper housewife.
